POSITION SUMMARY: 

This position leads the development of the companyís bid and estimate development and documents. The work involves reviewing specifications, proposals, drawings and other documentation to prepare detailed cost estimates. The position participates in sales, marketing and technical initiatives to expand company market share and reputation and to increase revenues.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Reviews customerís scope of work data and specifications; develops labor, material, and subcontractor price estimates for required work; develops project summaries of itemized prices; produces final bids incorporating costing and pricing for management review.
  2. Analyzes and interprets data to formulate strategies to enhance customer relations and direct efforts to designated markets; analyzes subcontractor quotes to determine best alternatives; discusses customer feedback on bids to the Estimating Manager and provides information and recommendations on costing changes.
  3. Uses history to establish and document standard costs; develops costs for new work where standards and history do not exist.
  4. Maintains quote database; prepares estimating meeting from data; develops labor budgets used for planning and scheduling of the work.
  5. Works with production management to formulate strategies for intended coatings and decking projects; develops work packages for distribution to production; prepares estimates for change orders.
  6. Identifies and schedules key and critical path work items; communicates and tracks achievement of critical pay items.
  7. Identifies and resolves ambiguities or inconsistencies in specifications or bid packages that could affect cost, prior to contract finalization.
  8. Establishes and maintains effective customer relations through demonstrated responsiveness to business needs and project status; build strong working relationships with venders to assure cost effective pricing and services.
  9. Participates in marketing/sales activities to increase revenues.
  10. Participates as needed with the Estimating Manager in sales visits to customers and prospects.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

 

JOB SCOPE:  

The role operates within general parameters but must use sound judgment and decision-making while exercising daily job responsibilities. This position works independently following general guidelines and goals identified by the Estimating Manager. The position has no supervisory responsibility. Has the ability to identify and propose changes to existing department procedures, but must obtain approval of their supervisor prior to implementing any changes. The incumbent is expected to establish effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work and may be expected to effectively influence others. Estimating accuracy can impact the overall business success.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:     None

 

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:  

This position requires daily inbound and outbound communications with current and potential customers. These interactions are centered on the complexity of the scope of work to be done/being performed and require a skilled touch to make sure the outcome either guarantees the work will be assigned or that it is completed in a way that encourages future business will be assigned. Fabricators, Steel Mills, Plate Distributors, Small Parts Manufacturers, and other firms are among the various external contacts that must be maintained and groomed to provide a steady amount of return work. Internal to the division, daily communication with the head of operations and production is essential for scheduling the proper volume of work at the proper time. Equally crucial is involvement with accounting to make sure all elements of a project are accounted for and any additional help is extended. Work with the Estimating Manager can be based around project bid review and outside sales efforts.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

 

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED equivalent is required. Prefer some college coursework in math and some exposure and knowledge of a production environment.

 

Minimum four (4) years of estimating experience in a maritime industry preferred. The individual must have experience and thorough knowledge of shipboard systems, government regulations, ship repair methods and administrative procedures.  

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:  None required. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:    

The physical demands for this position are light to moderate. Position will require some lifting, bending, sitting, and traveling in a car for varied amounts of time. You may be required to stand for extensive periods of time, in external climates. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:    

The work environment for this job is primarily office-oriented with occasional visits to the shop. Some overnight travel may be necessary to visit customer sites. Frequent to occasional visits to local customer sites may be required to inspect work or specifications. These visits may be around potentially hazardous equipment or conditions.
