Outside Machinist - Journey Level - VMAC

Location: Portland, OR

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Successfully performs work as an individual, as a member of a single craft, or multi-craft work crew. 

1.       Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures. 

2.       Properly cares for and safely uses hand and power tools and all company property. 

3.       Disassembles and inspects for wear, damage and possible malfunction of ships mechanical equipment aboard vessel and in shop, including but not limited to gas, diesel, and steam engines, electrical motors and accessories including valving, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment. 

4.       Repairs and inspects pumps and mechanical seals. 

5.       Works from ship specifications, work orders, and applicable working drawings and blueprints.

6.       Interacts with others to ensure ongoing safety of operation. May work with several individuals in a confined space. 

7.       Basic rigging skills a plus.

8.       Other duties as assigned.    

1.       Communicates effectively, works independently or in a group. 

2.       Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply. 

3.       Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English. 

4.       Pumps - types and mechanical seals. 

5.       Winches, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. 

6.   Must be willing to learn shipboard systems. 

High school or GED or equivalent combination of 3-5 years of education and directly applicable work and/or proven skills in the trade. 

The physical demands for this position require continual standing, walking and using fine motor skills for the operation of tools and machinery. May require some lifting or assistance with heavy equipment. Occasionally requires twisting, turning, bending, climbing, and walking over uneven surfaces. The work is performed inside a shop in which machines are continually running generating varying degrees of noise; the facility may be subject to varying temperatures. Work involves use of chemicals, acids, greases, solvents, petroleum and vapors and fumes. 

1.       Works indoors: Frequently- Works indoors exposed to temperature variances, vibrations, humidity, chemicals, dust and noise. 

2.       Works outdoors: Frequently- Works on shipboard exposed to typical Oregon weather. 

3.       Safety equipment required: Follow PPE requirements.

4.       Other Exposures: May be exposed to smoke, acids, degreasing cleaners, fumes, free silica, asbestos, dust, weld flash, paints, solvents, oil and grease. 

5.       Operation of equipment/tools/vehicles: Uses: grinders, hand/power tools, air torches, welding machines, come-a-long, chainfall, hammer, wedges, wire feeders, compressed gas tanks, plate shears, automatic multi-head burning machine, hydraulic press and punch, large and small plate rolls, carbon saw, large surface slab for securing fabrication, overhead and jib cranes and rigging, drill presses and a complete range of hand tools.
