Laborer - Helper

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Successfully performs work as an individual, as a member of a single craft, or a multi-craft work crew. Performs work with minimal supervision.

1.       Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures.

2.       Performs transportation, cleaning, and supporting shipyard projects.

3.       Performs general cleaning of the following: vessel, dock, sea valves, sea chest, chain locker and chains fore and aft peaks, void tanks, feed water tanks, aux. and main condenser, D.C. heater, portable air receiver, etc.

4.       Works in a team environment.

5.       Responsible for boiler and/or stack set up, pressure washing or steam cleaning.

6.       Properly cares for and safely uses hand and power tools and all company property.

 ESSENTIAL SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Incumbent performs similar work in all areas of the Yard as the need arises.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND/OR KNOWLEDGE

1.              Communicates effectively.

2.              Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply.

3.              Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English. (Reading Blue Prints, MSDS, creating and sending reports)

4.              Recognize and resolve unsafe working conditions.

5.              Ability to set up and monitor the operation of service pumps, i.e., keeping a pump from freezing, etc.

6.              Familiarity with the general layout of a vessel and its tanks, spaces, and other compartments.

 ESSENTIAL EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or GED preferred. Proven skills, work history and/or applicable education will be considered in lieu of work experience.

Helper

Grinds pipe and structural steel under the direction of a Journey Level employee or Supervisor. Pulls leads and/or cable as directed. May also perform Fire Watch related duties. To progress to the next level they must have three (3) basic Ship Repair Skills and acquire three more.

5.              Attention to detail: Must perform tasks in a safe manner both for personal safety and safety of those around.

6.              Flexibility: Needs to be flexible depending on needs of other crafts people.

7.              Other mental/psychological demands: None.

 ESSENTIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

1.              Works indoors: Frequently May be exposed to petroleum and petroleum by-products as well as grease, paint, fumes, dust, vibration, asbestos, free-silica, welding flash and noise.

2.              Works outdoors: Frequently- (Exposed to all kinds of typical Oregon weather.)

3.              Safety equipment required: Wears hardhat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and respirator for jobs that require it.

4.              Other Exposures: May be exposed to petroleum and petroleum by-products including grease, paint, fumes, dust, vibration, asbestos, free-silica, welding flash and noise.

5.              Operation of equipment/tools/vehicles: Uses jackhammer, high-pressure hose/gun, fire extinguisher, power/hand tools, air tools, mop, shovel, broom, come-a-long, needle gun, pump (up to 100#), welding lead, discharge hoses 1 1/2" x 50', utility knife, power tools, flashlight, and rope/synthetic line, etc.

6.              Required hygiene standards: Per company standards.

7.              Other: None.
