Heavy Industrial Shipyard Marine Mechanic

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list is not intended to detail all aspects of the assigned work but is representative of the job’s overall responsibilities) 

1.           Communicates effectively, works independently or in a group.

2.           Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures.

3.           Properly cares for and safely uses hand and power tools and all company property.

4.           According to manufacturers’ specifications, disassembles and inspects for wear, damage and possible malfunction of ships mechanical equipment aboard vessel and in shop, including but not limited to gas, diesel, and steam engines, electrical motors and accessories including valving, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment.

5.           Under supervision, removes and installs ship’s propellers and shafts, using air and electrical chainfalls and various other equipment.

6.           Diesel engine theory and repairs.

7.           Basic repair of evaporators.

8.           Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply.

9.           Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.

10.       Ability to do percentages, metric and decimal conversions, multiply fractions and decimals as required for use in measurements,.

11.       Propulsion and steering system basics including propellers and Rudders.

12.       Various type Pumps and mechanical shaft seals.

13.       Steam systems. Knowledge of Boilers and turbines a plus

14.       Shipboard machinery, including but not limited to Cranes, Davits, Winches, Valves of all type

15.       Hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.

16.       Shipboard systems including condensers, heat exchangers, fuel and lube oil, and cooling.

ESSENTIAL SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Incumbent performs similar work in all areas of the Yard as the need arises.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND/OR KNOWLEDGE
1.       Communicates effectively, works independently or in a group.

2.       Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply.

3.       Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.

4.       Ability to do percentages, metric and decimal conversions, multiply fractions and decimals as required for use in measurements,.

5.       Propulsion basics including variable pitch props.

6.       Pumps - types and mechanical seals.

7.       Steam systems.

8.       Underwater hull machinery, including bearings.

9.       Blowers, winches, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.

10.    Shipboard systems including condensers, heat exchangers, fuel and lube oil, and cooling. 

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High school or GED or equivalent combination of 6-10 years of education and directly applicable work and/or proven skills in the trade.

Journey Level 1 Ship Repair
Some knowledge of several skills with more advanced knowledge of 1 primary skill and possess at least 1 certification (hours in skilled trade & demonstrated proficiency). Requires general supervision during performance of primary skill, but is able to perform job duties of A-1 through A-3 with little or no supervision. 

ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Four-hour fire watch certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
