Decking Installer Helper

Job Purpose and Summary:
This job is responsible for effectively helping on removals and installation of products to marine deck surfaces. The Decking Installer Helper follows the directions and guidance of the advanced level Installer. The Incumbent applies assistance on multiple surface products from carpet, tiles, linoleum, underlayment and installation techniques and procedures.

Essential functions and major responsibilities include the following: (This list is not intended to detail all aspects of the assigned work but is representative of the job’s overall responsibilities)

1.    Assist in setup mobilizing and demobilizing of site and containment protection required on work sites. Running airlines, ventilation, power cords, etc.

2.    Demolition of flooring materials of such as electrical matting, carpet, tiles, underlayment, paint coatings, blasting and airless spray painting.

3.    Uses a variety of basic hand and electric tools following safety requirements and wears appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Examples of tools used include: carpet pullers, grinders, needle guns, sanders, tile rollers, tile saws, knives, scrapers, heat guns.

5.    Collects surface product remnants: cleans up materials, equipment and trash from the project site.

Job Scope:
Helper/Laborer performs duties of which do not require advanced skills or extensive training and performs them under the direction of a lead worker or superintendent. Duties include, supplying or holding material or tools and setting up, cleaning up work areas and equipment.

Supervisory Responsibility:
The Decking Installer Helper works under close supervision and has no supervisory responsibility. Expected and required to work well in a team environment.

Education and Experience:
Experience equivalent to six months performing duties related to deck installation and using the equipment required for this work.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: Safe work ethics and practices; basic house keeping; purpose and use of a variety of hand and hand-held electric tools, Ability to follow basic instructions with little or no guidance.

Ability to: perform the essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to safety or health of employee or others; use safe working practices; maintain a clean work environment; work with heavy tools and materials such as those named above; follow directions and accomplish work according to timelines; understand the basic steps needed to accomplish the work; work constructively as a part of a team; properly mix products according to instructions; read detailed product instructions and cautions.

Skill in: using maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull and carry objects on a daily and frequent basis; demolishing existing surface product with minimal damage to undersurface; using and caring for equipment and machines.

Physical Demands: The work is physically demanding requiring the ability to make quick, coordinated movements of both hands and to grasp, manipulate or assemble objects. Surface product installation and preparation requires bending, stretching, reaching, twisting with the body, arms and legs. Incumbents must lift, carry and place large heavy rolls of product and/or equipment; must also be able to climb ladders. Travel and/or working extended hours which may include weekends, holidays and evenings to perform assigned duties is required.

Work Environment: The work environment for this job is demanding and potentially hazardous due to work on or inside ships as well as travel around ship repair yard. The work is performed on board vessels and may involve working in tight, confined spaces for long periods of time. The work place is noisy and employees are exposed to extreme weather conditions when traversing around the shipyard.
