Database Developer

Department: Information Technology
Location: Pacific Northwest Region, OR

The primary responsibility for this position is to provide support, maintenance and development of the company’s existing data warehouse. Secondary responsibilities include designing, developing, testing, improving and maintaining new and existing databases to help users retrieve data effectively according to our company’s needs. This position is also responsible for enterprise application support and providing technical support to Information Technology staff and business departments.

As part of the IT team, this position collaborates with internal IT staff and other Vigor departments and business units to provide technical support and identify new requirements. Communication and organization skills are keys for this position, along with a problem-solution attitude.

Ultimately, this position ensures our database systems run effectively and securely on a daily basis.

Due to the nature of our business and this work, US Citizenship is required.

  2. Provide functions including troubleshooting, developing, upgrading and systems management in production, test, and development environments of the data warehouse (Microsoft SQL server) and other enterprise application systems.
  3. Secondary support for IFS ERP (Oracle database) and Kronos HR/Payroll and timekeeping system (Microsoft SQL server database).
  4. Monitor database usage, analyze business and information systems activities, and develop solutions relative to current technology and methodology.
  5. Write and troubleshoot complex stored procedures & interfaces.
  6. Manage database accounts and permissions to ensure the security and data integrity of the data.
  7. Periodically audit users and their security roles.
  8. Install modifications and additions to systems and work with other team members to fully test changes before deployment to production environment.
  9. Ability to work both independently as well as collaborate with internal and external team members.
  10. Provide direction and oversight to external partners assisting with enterprise application projects.
  11. Ensure Corporate and Information Technology policies are adhered to and security consistently enforced through proper role, permissions and access management.
  12. Responds to change productively and contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

The position operates within established parameters with decision-making authority over approach to database and application security and development architecture.


Interactions are both internal and external. The incumbent must be comfortable working in highly collaborative environment within the IT team and with other departments, at all levels of the company, and with outside partners. The incumbent communicates regularly through both verbal and written form in understandable terms. The incumbent may coach more junior team members. Interactions are with people who have a wide span of technical abilities.


BA/BS degree in Computer Information Systems or Computer Science preferred.

Minimum six (6) years increasingly responsible experience with experience in building and supporting Microsoft SQL Server databases and demonstrating above listed skills and abilities.

Experience working in Windows server-based environment is required.

Experience working with IFS ERP and Kronos Workforce Central/Workforce Timekeeper preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   Work is conducted in a dynamic, fast-paced office setting. The individual may be required to be in production areas in yard and onboard ships. He/she must be able to walk to and from job sites. He/she may be required to work more than 8-hour shifts and weekend work.
