POSITION SUMMARY: 

This position leads the development of the company’s bid and estimate development and documents. The work involves reviewing specifications, proposals, drawings and other documentation to prepare detailed cost estimates. The position largely works independently with significant interactions with vendors, internal departments such as Sales, Engineering and Project Management, while ensuring steady communication between all.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Reviews customer’s scope of work data and specifications; develops labor, material, and subcontractor price estimates for required work; develops project summaries of itemized prices; produces final bids incorporating costing and pricing for management review.
  2. Analyzes and interprets data to formulate strategies to enhance customer relations and direct efforts to designated markets; analyzes subcontractor quotes to determine best alternatives; discusses customer feedback on bids to the Proposal Manager and provides information and recommendations on costing changes.
  3. Uses history to establish and document standard costs; develops costs for new work where standards and history do not exist.
  4. Identifies and schedules key and critical path work items; communicates and tracks achievement of critical pay items.
  5. Identifies components and material that meet the project specification with guidance from Engineering, the Proposal Manager, and Sales.  
  6. Establishes and maintains effective customer relations through demonstrated responsiveness to business needs and project status; build strong working relationships with venders to assure cost effective pricing and services.
  7. Participates in marketing/sales activities to increase revenues.
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

 

JOB SCOPE:  

The role operates within general parameters but must use sound judgment and decision-making while exercising daily job responsibilities. This position works independently following general guidelines and goals identified by the Proposal Manager. The position has no supervisory responsibility. Has the ability to identify and propose changes to existing department procedures, but must obtain approval of their supervisor prior to implementing any changes. The incumbent is expected to establish effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work and may be expected to effectively influence others. Estimating accuracy can impact the overall business success.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:     None

 

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:  

This position requires daily inbound and outbound communications with current and potential customers. These interactions are centered on the complexity of the scope of work to be done/being performed and require a skilled touch to make sure the outcome either guarantees the work will be assigned or that it is completed in a way that encourages future business will be assigned. Equally crucial is involvement with accounting to make sure all elements of a project are accounted for and any additional help is extended. Work with the Proposal Manager can be based around project bid review and outside sales efforts.

  •  Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical specifications, reference drawings, technical documents, government documents, and regulatory body regulations.
  •  Ability to write reports, technical proposals, and business correspondences.
  •  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and employees.
  •  Ability to succeed in a diverse team environment.
  •  Ability to define problems, collect data.
  •  Ability to establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  •  Strong math skills including Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry.
  •  Knowledge of Autocad, Rhinoceros and parametric 3D modelling software is preferred.

 

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Prefer some college coursework in math and some exposure and knowledge of a production environment.

 

Minimum two (2) years of estimating experience in a production/manufacturing environment or maritime industry. Preference given for shipyard estimating background.

 

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:  None required.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   

The physical demands for this position are light to moderate. Position will require some lifting, bending, sitting, and traveling in a car for varied amounts of time. You may be required to stand for extensive periods of time, in external climates. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:    

The work environment for this job is primarily office-oriented with occasional visits to the shop. Some overnight travel may be necessary to visit customer sites. Frequent to occasional visits to local customer sites may be required to inspect work or specifications. These visits may be around potentially hazardous equipment or conditions.
