POSITION SUMMARY: 

As a key member of the financial management team, the Accounting Manager must have strong communication, organization, technology and leadership skills and a comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. This position supervises accounting staff responsible for maintaining company financial records including general accounting, revenue recognition, account reconciliation, fixed assets & consolidations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list is not intended to detail all aspects of the assigned work but is representative of the job’s overall responsibilities)

 

  1. Manages general ledger accounting staff and is responsible for day-to-day maintenance of the accounting records and fixed asset systems.
  2. Responsible for accurate & timely preparation of consolidated financial statements, along with supporting schedules as required by management, lenders & other stakeholders.
  3. Develops employees through training, monitoring and appraising job results.
  4. Assists in developing and implementing accounting systems and process improvements.
  5. Reviews general ledger account reconciliations for accuracy and proper accounting.
  6. Manages the annual audit with the Company’s independent auditors. Supports other periodic outside audit efforts from government customers and state taxing authorities.
  7. Supports audits & inquiries by government agencies such as the DCAA or DCMA.
  8. Prepares special financial reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing account information and trends.
  9. Fosters a collaborative environment for cross-functional communication.
  10. Updates job knowledge by participating in education opportunities
  11. Performs special projects as assigned

 

JOB SCOPE:

Operates within general parameter, but must use sound judgment and independent decision making when carrying out job responsibilities. Has the ability to influence and recommend accounting policies and procedures with respect to general accounting. The role reports to the Director, Accounting & Finance. The incumbent and staff are held accountable for the accuracy and timeliness of the work performance. Failure to report timely and accurate financial statements can result in failure to meet lender requirements.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervises 3-4 direct reports. The role involves a mixture of hands on supervision as well as providing technical support to other employees within the company.

 

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:  

The Accounting Manager coordinates his/her efforts with managers and supervisors at all levels in the company. The position represents the Company through formal and informal interactions with external auditors, government agencies, consultants, tax accountants as well as employees.

  •  Must be able to effectively organize and supervise accounting staff.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

BA/BS degree in Accounting or Finance is required.

Five to ten years of increasingly responsible experience with emphasis on accounting systems and process development (preferably in an industrial environment). Must have experience using or auditing accounting systems and procedures in a medium sized company environment. Must have experience with monthly close processes & financial statement consolidations. Advanced Excel spreadsheet experience required.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:  CPA preferred. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   Work is conducted in a dynamic, fast-paced office setting. The person may be required to be in production areas in yard and onboard ships. He/she must be able to walk to and from job sites.   He/she may be required to work more than 8-hour shifts and weekend work. There may be local travel up to 25% of the time and out-of-town travel (including air travel) up to 10% of the time with notice.
