Job Title:     Painter I                

Department: Production           

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt , Hourly                          

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for sandblasting steel products to required degree needed for painting. Responsible for painting steel products to specification.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSABILITIES:

  •  Able to direct subordinates, identify poor technique, non-compliant conditions, non-compliant coatings/processes, and correct any of the above.  
  •  Identify unsafe conditions and practices, stop production and repair any unsafe condition, or correct poor practice in subordinates 
  •  Working knowledge of both airless and conventional spray equipment and techniques 
  •  Operate and maintain all sandblasting equipment 
  •  Responsible for competing all assigned paint tasks such as pot-tending, stripe coating, masking, cleaning, and maintaining all associated paint equipment and booth maintenance.  
  •  Requires fork-lift training, blast media handling and storage.
  •  Care and identification of serviceable coatings and thinners  
  •  Auger training and service of blast recovery equipment       
  •  Blast recovery and/or disposal processes
  •  Identification of non-serviceable blast media           

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • None

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, regarding daily functions, safety rules and regulations, and possible hazardous conditions.
  • Ability to give instruction to others assigned to assist on projects.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must obtain C-12 certs within one year of hire 
  • Working knowledge of blue-prints and identification of mask areas, hold back areas, paint schemes, and overall compliant paint quality 
  • Assist supervision in adapting strategic coating sequences and processes 
  • Willing to participate in company supplied training for process improvement 
  • Recognize and take responsibility for proper environmental care and protection to include filter maintenance of baghouses, spill remediation, blast media handling,   booth and facility care and cleaning 
  • Become familiar with paint disposal processes, Still operations, and paint storage    
  • Must meet all requirements of Painter III & II listed below:
  •  Must be able to understand standard sandblasting practices      
  •  Must obtain C-7 certification within one year of hire
  •  Working knowledge of between coat paint preparation
  •  Working knowledge of all levels of Surface Preparation, SP1 – SP 10
  •  An ability to function in a safe manner and in accordance with company and industry safety standards, to include identifying and repairing unsafe conditions.                                
  •  Must be able and willing to work in confined spaces, at elevated heights, and follow and incorporate industry and company policies for safety compliance                   
  •  Must be able to wear fresh-air respirator, filtered respirator, blast helmet respiration, and pass health exam to support the above.                                                               
  •  Must be able to identify conditions that warrant the use of PPE, and what PPE is appropriate.
  •  Must be able to read/understand and work to pertinent job specifications and code requirements.   
  •  Must understand basic techniques associated with paint processes to include graduated hold-backs, millage requirements, millage checks (both wet and dry), neat masking skills, clean striping techniques
  •  Must be able to take and follow direction, working and participating in developing sequential plans and processes in order to produce quality efficiently

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Four years’ experience in industrial painting, or a demonstrated skill set allowing individual to blast/paint to spec with minimal oversight. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: N/A 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • Ability to lift, carry 60LBs, or maneuver objects, difficult objects will be lifted with the assistance of mechanical means or additional manpower.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, kneel, twist, pull, push, grip, and climb.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:    

May be exposed to excessive noise, paint gases and fumes, and varying weather conditions. Proper protective equipment will be provided as necessary
