Lofter - Assoc 3,4, Journey - SEA

Department: Fitter/Welder
Location: Seattle, WA

SUMMARY: As a Lofter, this position is responsible for building to scale patterns of clients’ vessels, prior to work being performed in a Vigor Industrial facility. Working from small scale photographs and blue prints the Lofter performs his duties in conjunction with the craft workers, designers and engineers. In this position a Lofter may work with optical markers or in the loft making line plans of the basic vessel structure.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Must have the ability to perform the essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat to safety or health of employee or others)

1.       Ensure that loft products meet all technical manuals and clients (military and commercial) standards, as per contract specifications.

2.       Assign sequence numbers to pre-fabrication specifications.

3.       Review pre-fabrication requests from supervisors and/or superintendents assigned to the “deck plates” and determine what parts require burn programs and/or sketches

4.       Communicate with purchasing to ensure proper parts have been ordered

5.       Maintain drawings for routine review from staff engineers and related technical persons

6.       Maintain hard and/or soft copies of all pre-fabrication requests

7.       Ensure technical status report is current and accurate

8.       Identify potential pre-fabrication issues, prior to work authorization

9.       Conduct ship checks as needed to guarantee a proper product or procedure being completed

10.   Work with Deck Plate Supervisors and Superintendents to determine order of events; with special attention to the larger parts of the job

11.   Work with Shop Personnel to determine the most efficient way to process larger pre-fabrication requests

REQUIRED BACKGROUND:

·         High school diploma or equivalency (GED)

·         Two or more years experience with Layout or Lofting in a ship repair or similar type of environment

·         Proficient in the use of AutoCAD or related program(s)

·         Journey level skills within one or more ship repair trades; such as: welding, pipefitting or outside machining

·         Ability to read and interpret blueprints or drawings of parts to be cast or patterns to be made; then computer dimensions and plan operational sequences

·         Superior math capabilities to include: Pythagorean Theorem, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, and conversion of decimals and fractions

·         Previous experience with the creation of templates, patterns, coreboxes, sample parts and mock-ups

·         Expert knowledge of compounded three dimensional shapes and pieces

·         Skilled with the use of lofting tools; to include: calculator, measuring tape, squares, string box, and other tools as required to accomplish work efficiently and accurately

·         Ability to use hand tools and related instruments, i.e.: bolts, screws, rivets, glue, basic welding equipment, emery cloth, files, scrapers and power grinders

Associate 3

Proficient in Fire Watch, Associate 1 and Associate 2 job duties. Trains and assists with rigging under the direction of a Journey Level employee or Supervisor. Assists with and/or performs mechanical bolting under the direction of a Journey Level employee or Supervisor. May perform Fire Watch, Associate 1 or Associate 2 duties. Must acquire three (3) additional Ship Repair Skills to progress to the next level.

Associate 4

Proficient in Fire Watch, Associate 1, Associate 2, and Associate 3 job duties. Requires general supervision during performance of primary skill, but is able to perform job duties of A-1 through A-3 with limited supervision. (work history and demonstrated proficiency in single skill or trade). Must acquire three (3) additional Ship Repair Skills and 1- certification to progress to the next level.

Journey Level 1 Ship Repair

Some knowledge of several skills with more advanced knowledge of 1 primary skill and possess at least 1 certification (hours in skilled trade & demonstrated proficiency). Requires general supervision during performance of primary skill, but is able to perform job duties of A-1 through A-3 with little or no supervision.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Knowledge of marine-related equipment, ship repair and construction techniques; sequencing of ship repair activities; shipyard safety practices; complex mathematical principles as applied to shipping activities.

Ability to effectively present technical information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and employees; read, understand and apply ship repair specifications, blue prints, technical procedures, and regulations; identify problems with production and rechart to correct; coordinate multiple details related to various projects simultaneously.

Skill in operating a personal computer and various PC applications such as word processing and spreadsheets and related drafting programs; interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form; working with several abstract and concrete variables; effectively resolving conflict; providing positive customer service; using tools as required for accomplishing the work.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: None required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   The physical demands for this position involve the ability to maneuver in a shipyard as needed to understand the breadth and depth of the work to be performed.  Requires extensive walking and standing; some climbing, crouching, twisting and stooping. May require some lifting or assistance with heavy equipment. Work may be performed outside or on board ships in all weather conditions, or in a climate controlled environment. Use of tools requires manual dexterity and fine motor movement.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:   The work environment for this job is demanding and potentially hazardous due to work on or inside ships as well as travel around ship repair yard.
