ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.  Successfully performs work as an individual, as a member of a single craft, or muti-craft work crew.  
1.    Complies with craft and shipyard safety and environmental measures.
3.    Demonstrate proficiency on knee mills, drill presses, engine lathes, and vertical and horizontal boring mills.
4.    Possesses a high level of proficiency when reading and understanding blueprints and assembly drawings.
5.    Works from ship specifications, work orders and applicable working drawings and blueprints.
7.    Responsible for being conversant in all quality assurance requirements.
8.    Demonstrates a high level of layout proficiency.
9.    High level of proficiency and application of machine shop math.
10.    Working knowledge of ship repair pertaining to the machine shop.
11.    Works with other crafts and their applied processes as it impacts the machine shop processes.

ESSENTIAL SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  Incumbent performs similar work as the need arises.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND/OR KNOWLEDGE
1.    Communicates effectively, works independently or in a group.
2.    Ability to do basic math, i.e. add, subtract, divide and multiply.
3.    Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
4.    Reads and understands blueprints and assembly drawings.
5.    Working knowledge of shipboard machinery (i.e. valves and actuators, variety of pumps, gears and gear boxes, winches, heat exchangers, bearings and shafting, rudder systems, field machining) pertaining to machine shop repairs.
6.    Understand and demonstrate the use of all standard shop measuring tools: Micrometers inside, outside, and depth, Vernier scales and/or dial calipers, Rulers and tape measures, Indicators, Protractors, Vernier, linear, Firm joint and spring joint calipers inside and outside, Height gauges, Pi tapes, and Advanced ability in the use hand tools (i.e. files and types of files, hacksaws, wrenches, porta powers, taps and dies).

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED preferred. 3-5 years relevant work experience. Proven skills, work history and/or applicable education will be considered in lieu of work experience.

Associate 2
Proficient in both Fire Watch and Associate 1 job duties.  Trains and assists with erecting and dismantling staging.  Assists with and/or performs basic pipe bolting under the direction of a Journey Level employee or Supervisor.  May perform Associate 1 or Fire Watch duties.  Must acquire three (3) additional Ship Repair Skills to progress to the next level.

Associate 3
Proficient in Fire Watch, Associate 1 and Associate 2 job duties.  Trains and assists with rigging under the direction of a Journey Level employee or Supervisor.  Assists with and/or performs mechanical bolting under the direction of a Journey Level employee or Supervisor.  May perform Fire Watch, Associate 1 or Associate 2 duties.  Must acquire three (3) additional Ship Repair Skills to progress to the next level.

Associate 4
Proficient in Fire Watch, Associate 1, Associate 2, and Associate 3 job duties.  Requires general supervision during performance of primary skill, but is able to perform job duties of A-1 through A-3 with limited supervision. (work history and demonstrated proficiency in single skill or trade).  Must acquire three (3) additional Ship Repair Skills and 1- certification to progress to the next level.

ESSENTIAL USE OF SENSES
Talking:  Frequently. Hearing: Continually, Vision: Continually, Near Acuity (clarity of vision at 20 inches or less), Far Acuity (clarity of vision at 20 feet or more), Depth Perception (three-dimensional vision to judge distance/ spatial relationships), Field of Vision (if required to observe a large field of vision while keeping eye fixed on a given point for job performance or safety).  Must have normal field of vision in order to safely navigate around machine shop area and on board ship, and Smell: Helpful in detecting fire.


ESSENTIAL MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
1.    Interaction/communication with others: Frequently- communicates with others while discussing safety issues and works in process.  Interprets directions, asks questions.
2.    Works alone/independently: Frequently- works independently in the presence of other machinists.
3.    Directs/supervises others: Not Required.
4.    Repetitive work:  Work can be repetitious, depending upon machinery problems that develop.
5.    Attention to detail: Must accurately measure machine parts to within .001.
6.    Flexibility: May need to change tasks depending upon priorities that develop over the course of the day.
7.    Other mental/psychological demands: Works with fine tolerance that may be difficult to achieve.


ESSENTIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
1.    Works indoors:  Continually- works in a warehouse machine shop setting that is heated but not air conditioned.
2.    Works outdoors: Occasionally- walks to and on board ship.
3.    Safety equipment required: Hard hat, eye and ear protection, respirator, no loose clothing, must wear leather shoes/work boots.
4.    Other Exposures: May be exposed to acids, de-greasing cleaners, paints, solvents, oil, grease, liquid steel/putty, oil vapors, petroleum, caustics, fumes, noise, raw sewage, and asbestos.
5.    Operation of equipment/tools/vehicles: Uses hand and power tools, wrenches, hoists, machine tooling equipment such as boring, grinding, tapping, lathe, and drilling equipment.  Uses micrometers/dial indicators and other measuring instruments.  Chainfalls, knee mills, radial arm drill press, upright drill press, overhead cranes (pendant controlled), portable machining equipment, come-a-longs, port-a-power, cut off saws.
6.    Required hygiene standards: Per company standards.
