Description

Vigor Industrial LLC, a privately held company headquartered in Portland, Oregon, seeks an outstanding business lawyer with deep experience working with city, state, and federal governmental entities on environmental matters. Vigor is the leading provider of shipbuilding, ship repair and complex fabrication in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. It has seven locations and approximately 2,300 employees who strive to work, live and lead by exemplifying Vigorís values: Truth, Responsibility, Evolution and Love. Vigorís goal is to provide world-class maritime and industrial services to support our customers and strengthen the communities where we live and work.

Responsibilities

You will work both independently and with Vigorís General Counsel and with Vigorís Vice President of Environmental Services, as well as other business leaders of Vigorís various business segments. The successful candidate will:

  • Review, draft and negotiate contracts for Vigorís business units
  • Establish strong, collaborative relationships with Vigorís environmental team to ensure that Vigor not only complies with its federal, state and local environmental permits, but continues to seek ways to surpass mandated protections
  • Interface with municipal, state and Federal environmental agencies in Alaska, Oregon and Washington
  • Oversee Vigorís participation in the Portland harbor and Seattle sound, and work with Vigor contractor on Gowanus Canal superfund allocation processes
  • Advocate for Vigor regarding environmental matters, including drafting pleadings, negotiating agreements with government agencies and defending cases in administrative hearings and in court
  • Negotiate and manage contracts affecting the shipyards Vigor owns on Swan Island in Portland, Oregon and on Harbor Island in Seattle, as well as Vigorís portfolio of leased facilities in Clackamas County, Oregon, Clark County, Washington, and Ketchikan, Alaska
  • Work with Vigorís Government Relations team to lobby for balanced regulations
  • Work with Vigorís Risk Management Department regarding insurance coverage for Vigorís various locations
  • Assist Vigor in the management of asbestos and legacy environmental claims
  • Work with outside counsel and the Vigor IT Department in responding to litigation discovery requests

Requirements

  • Law degree from an ABA accredited law school
  • At least five years of experience in environmental advice and litigation and in real estate transactions at a respected law firm
  • Works independently and effectively manage, on short timelines, a large workload of complex projects with multiple contributors 
  • Detail oriented 
  • Solid organizational skills 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to speak clearly and concisely, conveying complex or technical information in a manner that others can understand, as well as ability to understand and interpret complex information from others 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, establishing rapport and working well with others 
  • Confidence, humility, the good judgment to know when you donít know the answer, and the work ethic to find it
