Purpose for which the job exists:

The position is responsible for assembling dry dock blocks to assist in the docking of vessels.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Successfully performs work individually, as a member of a single craft, or a multi-craft work crew.

  1.  Constructs supporting structures out of dry dock blocks by cutting 20 timbers into 4 sticks and lifting and stacking these in 6 high or higher stacks in conjunction with other employees.
  2. Uses chainsaw to cut out block wood under loads and drives wedges using sledge hammers to drive up blocks
  3. Uses building bars to lift, insert shims and move multiple layers of sticks to facilitate building the supporting structures.
  4. Performs related carpentry using saws, hammers, drills, levels, air guns, drill press etc.
  5. Assists in the movement of rail cars to include coupling cars, setting brakes, ensuring glad hand connections are properly executed and air valves are opened and closed as needed.
  6. Understanding of proper rigging techniques to include heavy lift picks, chocking of loads, sling/shackle ratios, use of spreader bars and tag lines and ability to use proper hand signals and whistles to communicate with the crane operator and those in the surrounding area.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND/OR KNOWLEDGE

  1. Communicates effectively, work independently or in a group.
  2. Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English.
  3. Working knowledge of the following processes:
  •  Stacking dry dock blocks
  •  Use of carpentry/shop equipment
  •  Rail car movement
  •  Rigging loads

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED preferred. 3 years relevant work experience. Proven skills, work history and/or applicable education will be considered in lieu of work experience.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sitting, Standing, Walking, Crouching, Kneeling/Crawling, Stooping, Twisting, Climbing, Balancing Leg/Foot Use, Reaching, Handling/Grasping, Fine manipulation, Pushing/Pulling (up to 100 pounds), Lifting/Carrying (up to 100 pounds), and other similar physical demands.

Lifting requirements may be up to 60lbs on a repetitive basis, much of the time at shoulder height or above. When using building bar to lift sticks and insert shims may be pushing/lifting up to 150lbs at a time.

ESSENTIAL USE OF SENSES

Talking, Hearing, Vision Near Acuity/Far Acuity, Depth Perception (three-dimensional vision to judge distance/ spatial relationships), Color Vision (if required to distinguish colors for job performance or safety), Field of Vision (if required to observe a large field of vision while keeping eye fixed on a given point for job performance or safety), and Smell.

ESSENTIAL MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Interaction/communication with others, Works alone/independently, May direct/supervise others according to level of position, ability to perform repetitive work, attention to detail, and flexibility and adaptability.

ESSENTIAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  1. Works indoors: in areas exposed to external weather conditions
  2. Works outdoors: in all types of weather.
  3. Uses safety equipment.
