POSITION SUMMARY: 

Working in a team environment, sets up and operates machines and machining centers to produce parts per specified requirements. The expectation of the employee will be to demonstrate an on-going proven performance in quality, throughput, attendance, punctuality, accuracy, good housekeeping skills and shop safety culture.

                                                                                                    

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Machine parts to print and within budget using shop equipment in a fast paced environment.
  •  Complies with craft best practices and Vigor safety policies. 
  •  Demonstrate proficiency on knee mills, drill presses, engine lathes, and vertical and     horizontal mills. CNC knowledge a plus. 
  •  Works from ship specifications, work orders and applicable working drawings and  blueprints. 
  •  Responsible for being conversant in all quality assurance requirements. 
  •  Apply a working knowledge of ship repair pertaining to the machine shop. 

 

TOOLS REQUIRED:

  • Has his/her own basic tools such as test indicator, travel indicator, calipers, edge finder, dead blow hammer, scientific calculator, 123 blocks, combination square, machinist handbook, etc…

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • None

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Has solid print reading skills and a working knowledge of GD&T (i.e. positional tolerance, mmc, feature control frames, etc..).
  • Has ability to set up and run complex jobs with little or no supervision on a variety of shop equipment.Has a solid working knowledge of speeds and feeds, tools/insert identification, appropriate use of cutting tools. Completely capable of establishing own speeds/feeds, depths of cut and adjusting them accordingly to maximize throughput.
  • Thorough understanding of shop math (I.e. Calculate speeds/feeds,Pythagorean theorem, geometry, right angle trigonometry)
  • Basic upkeep and preventative maintenance of the machine as required.
  • Knowledge of rigging and overhead crane operation, lifting device use and inspection and load calculations.
  • Working knowledge of shipboard machinery (i.e. valves and actuators, variety of      pumps, gears and gear boxes, winches, heat exchangers, bearings and shafting, rudder systems, field machining) pertaining to machine shop repairs a plus.
  • Appropriate care and use of most shop measuring equipment. Can independently      inspect parts to print using standard shop measuring tools: Micrometers inside, outside, and depth, Vernier scales and/or dial calipers, Rulers and tape measures, Indicators, Protractors, Vernier, linear, Firm joint and spring joint calipers inside      and outside, Height gauges, Pi tapes, etc..

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 years minimum experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • None required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands for this position require continual standing, walking and      using fine motor skills for the operation of tools and machinery. 
  • Ability to lift, carry 60Lbs. May require some lifting or assistance with heavy equipment. Occasionally requires t twisting, turning, bending, climbing, and walking over uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, kneel, twist, pull, push, grip, and climb.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  

  • The work is performed inside a shop in which machines are continually running generating varying degrees of noise.
  • Work may involve use of chemicals, coolants, greases, solvents, petroleum and      vapors and fumes.
  • Proper PPE will be provided as necessary.
