Job Title: Assembly/Millwright Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly                    

Reports To: Machining Production Manager

The Vigor Machine team is a provider of emergent ship repair as well as outfitting and assembly of new project builds such as wheel gates for the hydro industry, or stacker cranes for commercial airline paint hanger facilities. We regularly work on repair projects involving steam turbines, reciprocating engines, pumps, valves, in-place machining using portable mills and line boring equipment and much more. And we do it with a “Can do, get it done (right)” attitude.

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Manage a team of assembly millwrights for outfitting and assembly of new project builds. Responsible for the effective and successful management of labor, budgets, productivity, quality control and safety measures established at Vigor. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing, selection and hiring; training new and existing employees; planning, assigning and directing work; authoring and discussing with employees performance appraisals; addressing employee performance and corrective action plans. Rely on extensive machining, fabrication experience and judgment to plan and accomplish objectives.   Performs a variety of tasks. Leads and directs the work of others. A wide degree of creativity will be required to be successful in this role.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  •  Lead a team to disassemble, diagnose, repair or replace, reassemble and test small to large assemblies for new builds and the ship repair industry. 
    •  Clean up as you go to make sure your job site remains well-organized, free of unnecessary clutter.  
    •  Fit bearings, shafts, attach motors, and connect and align couplings and belts to precise tolerances.
    •  Assemble and test mechanical components
    •  Will read blueprints, diagrams, bill of materials, schematics and other technical documents to dismantle and assemble equipment.  
    •  Develop plans and sequencing for assemblies.
    •  Has a solid, working knowledge of rigging and overhead crane operation, lifting device use and inspection and load calculations.
    •  Use a variety of hand tools and measuring tools. You will lift heavy objects, physically manipulate objects with tools as needed utilizing cranes and other equipment to complete large-scale projects in your daily job duties. 
    •  Electromechanical assembly work

    •  Sets daily production goals, measures performance and provides feedback to employees.
    •  Provides training and mentorship or assists to assign/resource training as needed on safety, use of equipment and work procedures.
    •  Evaluates employees on skills and work performance and reports progress to craft management.
    •  Assures break & meal periods throughout the shift are followed according to company policies.
    •  Plans labor, material and equipment per project plans and safety requirements
    •  Estimates and orders staffing as needed per work scope.
    •  Participates in production meetings as required.
    •  Manages and coordinates shop related items required for the project.
    •  Demonstrates the ability to measure job progress.
    •  Orders materials and equipment per specifications.
    •  Assists project team with production schedules and maintains schedule to meet project goals.
    •  Assists project team with change orders, estimating and progress tracking.
    •  Ensures accurate time keeping according to company policies and guidelines.
    •  Ensures that work meets or exceeds quality standards.
    •  Completes or confirms that all quality assurance documentation is complete and work is satisfactory prior to final inspection.
    •  Accesses referenced technical requirements from specification.
    •  Ensures that latest revision of any applicable drawings and specifications are being used.
    •  Demonstrates an acceptable understanding of the relevant codes and acceptance criteria of areas of responsibility.
    •  In conjunction with QA department, evaluates discrepancies to determine root cause and gives proper instruction to preclude reoccurrence.
    •  Ensures test equipment for required test and trials are in good working order and calibrated.
    •  Ensures that all spills of oil, hazardous materials, new or spent blast media, paints, etc. are cleaned up immediately.
    •  Ensures workforce adherence to all company Best Management Practices.
    •  Ensures adequate containment to capture any discharges from activities conducted.
    •  Ensures work site is cleaned at the end of each shift; all materials placed in proper containers.
    • Reads the entire specification for the project and determines expectations for scope of work.
    • Writes or edits JHA, CFR and other forms to company standards.
    • Spends most of their time on the job site, providing clear and precise direction to others.
    • Assures work force complies with company policy and has direction and tooling to be productive.
    • Completes assigned work on a project (all items and support of others).
    • Communicates daily progress to Project Team and Craft Management
    • Oversees multiple work groups and items.
    • Receives broad scope of work and direction from project team.
    • Assures all employees are in their work sites at the appropriate times.
    • Regularly works with tools while supervising small crew.
    • Faces up to and addresses people problems or conflicts quickly and directly.

  • Troubleshooting skills are required.
  • Ability to follow a problem to the source and solve the issue. 
  • Mechanical aptitude is essential. 
  • Ability to run manual machine tools is a plus. Need to be able to do this safely using the correct equipment to avoid injury to self and others.  

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in area of specialty or 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

  • None required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • The physical demands for this position require continual standing, walking and using fine motor skills for the operation of tools and machinery. 
  • Ability to lift, carry 60Lbs. May require some lifting or assistance with heavy equipment. Occasionally requires twisting,turning, bending, climbing, and walking over uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, kneel, twist, pull, push, grip, and climb.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:   

  • The work is performed inside a shop and outside in the elements
  • The work is performed around industrial equipment generating varying degrees of noise.
  • Work may involve use of chemicals, coolants, greases, solvents, petroleum,vapors and fumes.
  • Proper PPE will be provided as necessary.
